MONA • オマエモナー
The first internet cat
Japan’s first cryptocurrency!

Mona was not created as a mascot or brand. She emerged from anonymous Japanese text boards in the early internet era, constructed entirely from characters and shared by repetition. Long before social media, long before Dogecoin, Mona existed as a cultural reflex. In 2013, that same meme became Monacoin, Japan’s first cryptocurrency.
This site is an archive, a shrine, and a living meme.

Lore!

The First Internet Cat

Mona predates modern meme culture entirely. Her earliest appearances trace back to 1993–1996, making her the oldest known internet cat meme. Before Giko. Before everything, before everything.

Japan’s First Cryptocurrency

Launched in December 2013 by an anonymous developer known as Mr. Watanabe, Monacoin became Japan’s first blockchain experiment and the only one born directly from meme culture.

Before Dogecoin

In 2017, Monacoin surpassed a market cap of 850 million, becoming the first memecoin to ever do so. Dogecoin followed later.

Born From 2channel

Mona is inseparable from Japanese anonymous culture. Shift JIS art, repetition, sarcasm, and collective authorship define her existence.

Character Evolution

From Monā to Morarā to Hattoushin, Mona evolved alongside the internet itself, spawning flash animations, games, dances, and countless remixes.

A Cult, Not a Brand

No roadmap. No corporation. Just belief, repetition, and shared memory. Mona persists because people keep summoning her.
